GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION INFORMATION

Thank you for your interest in running for office in the City of Villa Park!


The Nomination Period for the City of Villa Park General Municipal Election is officially open. 

FILING PERIOD for City Council Member Candidates:

Monday, July 16, 2018 through Friday, August 10, 2018, 5:00 p.m.

Official Nomination Packets must be issued by the City Clerk during regular office hours (more information provided below).


This site provides you with information related to the two (2) separate processes related to running for local office: 

1.         Becoming an official City Councilmember candidate

2.         Starting a campaign which raises or expends funds toward a particular election

Please be advised:  The City Clerk’s Office is prohibited from providing third-party advice related to specific campaign activities. We encourage you to research and familiarize yourself with the information provided in this packet, the materials, rules, and regulations provided by the State of California (listed further in this packet), and enlist the support of the appropriate legal and financial counsel prior to starting your campaign or filing your official nomination paperwork.

 

BECOMING AN OFFICIAL CITY COUNCILMEMBER CANDIDATE 

Your name can only appear on the November 6, 2018 ballot as a qualified City of Villa Park City Council candidate through the official candidate nomination process. Nomination paperwork cannot be issued or filed outside of the official nomination period.  Nomination paperwork can only be issued by the Villa Park City Clerk.

Positions Open for Election:  City Councilmember, 3 seats open

                                                       -     4 year terms (November 2018 – November 2022)

Candidate Qualifications:     At the time the nomination papers are issued, a candidate must be:

-         At least 18 years old

-        A United States citizen

-        A resident of the City of Villa Park

-         Registered to vote in the City of Villa Park

Candidate Filing Period:     Monday, July 16, 2018, 8am through Friday, August 10, 2018, 5pm

Please note: Nomination period will be extended through Wednesday, August 15, 2018, 5pm should an eligible incumbent fail to file official nomination paperwork by Friday, August 10, 2018, 5pm

All official paperwork must be issued from and filed with the City Clerk of Villa Park during regular office hours.  We encourage you to schedule an appointment with the City Clerk for issuance of the Nomination Paperwork during the nomination period.

Regular Office Hours:         Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm (except as posted)

STARTING YOUR CAMPAIGN 

You are not prohibited from raising or expending funds towards an election prior to becoming an official candidate.  You can form an election committee any time prior to a particular election as long as you follow the rules and regulations set by the State of California pursuant to election campaigns. 

There is certain paperwork you must file at the local and state level prior to expending or receiving funds toward a particular election campaign, depending on the source and amount of the funds. 

This paperwork is available free of charge through the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC). Along with this information sheet, the City Clerk’s Office will provide you with the FPPC’s Manual for Local Candidates, the FPPC’s Information Fact Sheet for Local Candidates, and copies of the most commonly utilized forms.  The City Clerk’s Office cannot advise you as to the appropriate forms to file or when to file your campaign paperwork.  Deadlines for the filing of campaign forms are listed within the information provided by the FPPC.

NOTE: You can ONLY become an official candidate by being issued and filing the Official Nomination paperwork during the Official Filing period. Paperwork cannot be issued by the City Clerk prior to the Nomination period and cannot be accepted after the final deadline. The Official Candidate Nomination period for the November 6, 2018 election is:  Monday, July 16, 2018, 8am through Friday, August 10, 2018, 5pm.

Filers The following public officials, specified in Government Code Section 87200 include Mayors, Councilmembers, City Attorneys, City Managers, Planning Commissioners, and persons who manage public investments, file Statements of Economic Interests (Form 700’s) with the City Clerk of the City of Villa Park.
